Please answer this question on the back of your kitchen floor plan poster before you hand it in to be graded. Your answer should be at least 10 sentences long.
Question: Explain why you made each design decision you did and explain how your design will benefit your client. For example, tell me: - About the flow of the space. - Why you put the furniture, island, or additional room where you did. - Explain why you put the appliances where you did (which formation did you use?). - Where did you place the light(s)? What lighting did you choose to use and why? - What colors, or materials did you choose and why? What kind of a design style did you try to emulate? - Explain the number of seats you included and why. Be specific! Answering these questions will help me to understand where you are coming from with your design so that I can give you the grade you deserve. Additionally, you may refer to this response when you are presenting the poster in front of the class. Remember, try to really SELL your design.

For this assignment you will work in a group of 4 to design a kitchen for a specific client. Your group must use the correct professional symbols to fill the empty floor plan. Additionally, a requirement of this assignment is that you must include at least 2 different types of lighting (make sure you label them!).
Things to consider: Triangle Layout or Workstation Layout? Seating? (How many are needed?) Flow? (Is it easy for the people using the space to move around?) National Kitchen and Bath Association Standards NKBA recommends that a sink be located adjacent to or across from the cooking surface and refrigerator The sink should be surrounded by a 24-inch-wide landing area to one side and at least an 18-inch-wide landing area on the other side. Any island must allow for at least 42 inches of space around it. No more than 6 feet between appliances for ease of movement Different types of lighting:
What are the client’s specific needs? How will you present your design to your client? Different Clients for Each Group: 1.) MOTHER AND DAUGHTER: Cindy is a 45 year old woman who lives in a townhouse with her 75 year old mother. Cindy does most of the cooking and cleaning in the house but sometimes Cindy’s mom likes to cook authentic cuisine that she used to make back when she lived in the “old country”. Cindy and her mom would definitely appreciate a traditional kitchen. Because Cindy’s mom is an older woman, she doesn’t like having to strain her neck and back obtaining cooking supplies. The two women are looking for a comfortable eat-in kitchen for themselves. (They don’t like to do much entertaining.) Additionally, Cindy is interested in having a kitchen that makes clean-up as easy as possible. 28’ x 25’ (small areas 2’ x 9’) 2.) NEWLY MARRIED COUPLE: John and Melanie are a newly married couple and bought a fixer upper starter home for cheap. They are looking to renovate their kitchen and are interested in adding an additional room onto the kitchen that is 14’ x 14’. The room they would like to add onto the kitchen would be not only a dining space with a table and chairs, but it would also be a sunroom with many large windows. John and Melanie are a hip, young couple and would like a kitchen with a very bright, modern, “in your face” design. They want their kitchen to make a statement. Also, technology, like a TV or surround sound speakers for music and entertaining, would be an added bonus! 3.) COLLEGE HOUSEMATES: Jack, Paige, and Claire are 20 year old college students that live in a row home in Philadelphia, PA. They are housemates so they all share the kitchen throughout the day. Jack and Paige are very social people and love having friends over the house all of the time. Therefore, Jack and Paige would like some additional seating in the kitchen for their friends. Claire, on the other hand, is more of an introvert and has a hard time sharing the kitchen with her other two roommates. Claire would like an area of the kitchen to call her own - whether it be a space to store her food or a place to sit and do her schoolwork. Because their kitchen is often a chaotic space, the 3 tenants would like their kitchen to give off a relaxing vibe, therefore, they are not interested in bright colors or furniture with pointed edges. Paige would also like to keep some of her plants in the kitchen, so natural light is a must. 23’ x 23’ x 16’ 4.) SINGLE MOTHER WITH 2 KIDS: Jodi is a 37 year old single mother with 2 kids (ages 2 and 5). She works a full-time job and pays for a nanny to stay at home with her kids during the day while she is at work. Therefore, the kitchen is used A LOT throughout the day. Jodi would like a kitchen with a lot of counter space so she can do meal prep for her children throughout the week. Additionally, Jodi would like to find space in her kitchen for a small desk and chair so that she may set up her laptop and do some work while her kids are eating. She would like comfortable furniture in the space for her children and she is interested in furniture and appliances that can withstand a lot of wear and tear. She thinks a few rugs in the space might also be a good idea. 15’ x 36’ 5.) FAMILY OF 5: Gordon and Genesis are a married couple with 3 kids (ages 6, 10, and 12). Gordon is a chef at a 5-star restaurant and LOVES to cook. In fact, he cooks a nice, well-prepared meal for his family almost every night. Gordon would love a kitchen with a TON of storage for pots, pans, food, silverware, plates, etc. He is also interested in a good deal of counter space so he can easily prepare his meals. A kitchen with 2-sinks, an island, and enough seating for every family member is a must. Additionally, Gordon and his family would like to extend one of the walls to create a booth for eating (like one you might see in a restaurant). Lastly, aesthetics (like color and style) aren’t as important to Gordon but a good deal of proper lighting and comfortability in the space is what Gordon needs to be a successful chef for his family. 6.) THE BACHELOR: Sam is a 24 year old, single man who just moved into a brand new apartment in Brooklyn, NY. He works for a very up-and-coming technology company in Manhattan so having the most state-of-the-art kitchen is something that’s important to him. However, he realizes he does not have a lot of space. Luckily, Sam doesn’t do a lot of cooking and prefers to go out to eat most nights of the week. He would like a microwave and a stove with at least two burners though, just in case. Sam also has a love for all things vintage and would love a kitchen with a 1950’s diner feel. Who knows, maybe one day he will invite a special someone over to his apartment to eat in his kitchen. How romantic! 10’ x 27’ |
